Prevent Summer Plumbing Emergencies

July 26, 2018

Now that summer has arrived, that doesn’t mean that you should stop performing your regular plumbing duties. With the arrival of hot weather comes a whole new set of summer plumbing challenges that are preventable. We recommend the following tips for summer regarding for plumbing maintenance.

Be Careful With Your Garbage Disposal

Warmer temperatures mean more cookouts and outdoor gatherings. If you plan to spend more time in the kitchen preparing food, don’t forget that your garbage disposal can’t handle everything that you may be tempted to throw down there. Items such as oils, fats, cornhusks, onion peelings, celery, and other types of stringy or oily foods can create clogs and blockages in your pipes. Dispose of these items another way.

Check Your Ductwork

As the temperatures go up, so does the amount of moisture and humidity in the air. Not only does this lead to a muggy and stifling environment, it also causes the pipes and ductwork in your home to sweat. Sweating on these vital components of your plumbing system can lead to condensation in the drains and cause them to backup. The accumulation of condensation on your pipes and ductwork can also lead to leaks and moisture control issues that could result in costly summer plumbing repairs.

Get a Plumbing Inspection

Summertime means more rain. With the arrival of rain comes tree root growth, which can cause sewer backups and flooding. Even if you have not had any problems with flooding in the past, it is a good idea to have a plumbing inspection at the start of each summer season. This is one of the most important tips for summer when it comes to plumbing
